We just finished a Native American Unit while studying about the Woodland Indians with the famous Squanto and the Plains Indians of Three Forks. We learned that Squanto lived in a wigwam and planted nearby gardens with corn, pumpkins, squash, and beans; while the Three Forks Native Americans lived in tepees, homes that could be taken down quickly and transported easily so tribes could follow the buffalo, their main source of food. We also learned about the edible plants they found in the nearby areas.
To make learning fun and engaging we participated in many hands-on experiences in class. We used bows and arrows to target at newly learned sight words and circled the sight words on a small template as we hit them on a deer the target. We built Plains Indian environments and crushed corn with a bowl and pestle to make corn flour, and made buck skin hides with pictograph stories. We even got to explore replica tools made out of obsidian and other rocks that the natives may have used on a daily basis.
Our next unit of study will be Sea Animals! Keep tuned in for more pictures!
